A 31-year-old Bend man was jailed after driving through a red light and crashing into a pickup causing several injuries. Sunday at 1:35 a.m., officers from the Bend Police Department and deputies from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a serious motor vehicle crash at the intersection of NE 8th St. and NE Greenwood Ave.

Bend Fire and Rescue arrived and treated multiple patients at the scene from a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado. Several of those occupants were transported to St. Charles Medical Center with significant injuries.  One of the occupants sustained potentially life-threatening injuries.  The DUII suspect, who was driving a 2022 Toyota Tacoma, was uninjured.

Based on statements and evidence found at the scene, investigators believe that the Toyota Tacoma  as traveling eastbound on Greenwood Ave as the Chevrolet Silverado was traveling northbound on 8th St. Based on the investigation, it appears the suspect failed to stop for a red light and struck the Silverado that was proceeding north through a green light. Two passengers of the Chevrolet Silverado were riding in the bed of the truck.  One of those passengers was ejected.  Officers contacted the suspect and he was taken into custody for DUII and cooperated with the investigation.

Stewart was booked at the Deschutes County Jail on the following charges:

Assault 3 (B-Felony for DUII enhancement) (4 counts)

DUII

Reckless Driving

Reckless Endangering (6 counts)

Officers are working to notify the families of those parties involved in this incident.  Further information may be released at a later time.

Highway 20/Greenwood Avenue and 8th Street were closed for over 4-hours and were re-opened at approximately 6:30 a.m.

Members of the Bend Police crash reconstruction team responded to investigate and process the scene.  The Bend Police Department was assisted by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Bend Fire and Rescue, the Oregon Department of Transportation Incident Response team and the City of Bend Streets Department. We would like to thank them for their assistance.
